Can Essential Oils Help me?
Recently, I had a booth at a health fair for the employees at my organization. It was a great experience because I got to have my essential oils right there for people to smell, see and experience. There was some great questions and great conversations. It prompted me to focus on the top questions people ask about essential oils when they are new to them!
Do Essential Oils Really Work?
Essential oils have been around for thousands of years – they were mankind’s first real medicine. There has been proof of their existence on Egyptian hieroglyphics and Chinese manuscripts. We also know that priests and physicians have been using oils from aromatic plants for thousands of years. There are 188 references to essential oils in the Bible. The history speaks for itself.
The science behind essential oils is also fascinating. For starters, there are oils that can actually pass the blood-brain barrier, the membrane between the circulating blood and the brain that prevents damaging substances from reaching brain tissue. This is because they contain sesquiterpenes which are the chemical constituents found in essential oils. These same constituents also help increase the amount of oxygen in the limbic system of the brain which leads to increased secretions of antibodies, endorphins, and neurotransmitters.
Our limbic system is amazing. It is directly affected by smell – its the only sense that doesn’t get “interpreted” by our brains first. Located in the limbic system is a gland called the amygdala which was discovered to play a major role in storing emotional trauma. The only way to stimulate this gland is with fragrance or sense of smell. Imagine how powerful essential oils can be in assisting people with emotional trauma?
Can’t I just buy essential oils at my local health food store? They are SO much cheaper!
This one I totally get. I thought this at first too but the older and wiser I get the more I realize that you get what you pay for. I only use certified therapeutic grade essential oils which are very costly to produce. It can sometimes require several thousand pounds of plant materials to extract just 1 pound of pure essential oil. The perfume industry has been the main producer of essential oils and in order to produce the mass quantities they need to, they often use high pressure, high temperatures and rapid processing to extract their oils. The oils are then often mixed with chemical solvents so that a greater quantity of oils can be produced. They also have many additives in the final product, so what you are experiencing is not the pure oil itself. These essential oils used by the perfume industry are generally for aromatic use and they do smell good, but they lack the necessary components to produce true therapeutic results.
When you are using an oil that has been extracted using the best methods, at lower heat keeping the integrity of the oil and of the plant it is extracted from, you get an oil that you can trust to use on your skin, breathe into your limbic system and even in some cases, take internally. After all, essential oils penetrate the skin and cell membranes, oxygenating our cells, meaning they help transport nutrients to diseased cells that are lacking oxygen. By providing this needed oxygen to cells, essential oils can stimulate the immune system.
Essential oils are also powerful antioxidants, creating an unfriendly environment for free radicals which do damage to your skin. Essential oils can prevent fungus and oxidation of cells. Essential oils are antibacterial, anticancer, antifungal, anti-infectious, antimicrobial, antitumor, antiparasitic, antiviral and antiseptic. They have been shown to destroy all tested bacteria and viruses while at the same time bringing balance to the body.
Don’t you wan t only the best oils on your skin and in your system? If so, you want to make sure the oils you use are therapeutic grade. I am a nurse and feel completely safe using certified therapeutic grade essential oils with my family.
Are there essential oils to help me with weight loss?
Yes! There are many essential oils that can assist with weight loss. A small list is grapefruit, lemon, peppermint, ginger and cinnamon – all essential oils that are known to help sooth digestive issues, assist with diminishing those problem fatty skin areas, increase energy, improve circulation and promote healthy digestion. Any of these essential oils can be mixed in your glass water bottle to drink throughout the day. You can also rub them directly on problem areas such as thighs and buttocks, or use them in a blend as aromatherapy to uplift you and support an increase in energy!
Remember, when using essential oils to support weight loss, you need to make sure you are exercising and eating a healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables – there is never a substitute for this!
Can essential oils help me with a mid-day energy sap?
All of the essential oils I just mentioned would be a wonderful for this. There are also so many blends of essential oils that you can put together yourself that will give you the support you need without turning to caffeine midday. My favorite is wild orange and peppermint. I love diffusing these together. Peppermint is also great to place a drop on the palms of your hands and rub on the back of your neck. It provides a cooling affect. Breathed deeply, it always gives me an energy boost and wakes me right up!
Which essential oils can help balance my hormones and help with fertility?
This is such a great topic which probably could be an entire blog post all by itself. There are many essential oils that can help support balanced hormones. I will touch on a few here. First, there is geranium which has such a wonderful scent. Not only does it help balance hormones and help regulate your menstrual cycle, it is great for your skin and hair as well. Another incredible essential oil for balancing hormones, in particular Estrogen is Clary Sage. This essential oil can be diffused in the air, inhaled directly, applied topically to areas of concern, and taken in capsules or with a mixture of water and honey. Clary sage is also excellent for helping ease emotional stress.
I know first-hand how stressful it can be to deal with infertility. One of the main reasons I do love essential oils is for their calming, balancing affects on mood and stress. To be able to relax after a long day is key to getting our bodies to truly relax. The aromatherapy that is provided by essential oils is such a help in my life and I know it can be in yours too.
